Walking to School in the Rain
Getting to school can be a big deal even though it is only a block away.
Notice one of the little pumpkins didn't want to be under the unbrella.  It concerned me for a bit, but honestly they all got soaked.

Winter Wonderland
This past week we have been learning about snow.  I know that these children live in Haiti and it never gets below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  Actually the children here do know what cold is.  Many of them wear pants and long sleeve shirts.  Therefore, when the children see an the illustration of snow in A Silly Snowy Day we are reading they exclaim, "Fwet!"
For read aloud we read the same book for an entire week, so that it becomes a familiar text.  But, the students loved this one so much we are doing it for two weeks.

Confetti Snowflakes

Glitter Snowflakes

These last two photographs did not capture the beauty of these snowflakes.  They are by far my favorite, because they look absolutely whimsical.

Sensory Board
There is a kiddo in my afternoon class that makes me excited to be creating our classroom sensory board.  We had an ugly wall that I usually cover with art work.  I have referred to this board before.  I did this project with my preschool students to get started on our classroom sensory board.  The materials I choose were meant to arose their visual, auditory, and tactile senses.

Note:  I went over these projects with a firmer glue in order that the objects won't fall off.

Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Images
I have been using PECS images in our classroom since the beginning of the school year.  The purpose of these cards is for me to communicate with my Creole speaking students through images.  I used PECS images while in the States when working with my special education kids and can't believe how great it has worked for my English as a Second Language Students (ESL).

Christmas Concert
Last Wednesday the preschool classes performed two songs for the nannies and staff.  They did the most outstanding job!  And, they looked cute too!
Thank you to Chante for bringing the red shoes in the middle all the way back from Arizona.  All three of the preschool girls were able to wear sparkly shoes.  It was a big deal.
These children looked so precious in their beautiful outfits.  The nannies loved dressing them up.  I think they were more excited then the children.
I have to feature the sparkly shoes one more time.
Back in October the students began practicing "Jingle Bells" in both English and Creole.  The Haitian version of "Jingle Bells" is about all the little children eating hot pate (pictured above).  Pate is a Haitian food that people enjoy eating during Christmas.  It reminds me of a hot pocket, because it is meat folded into dough then baked.
We ended the afternoon with a Birthday song for Jesus in English and Creole.

Salt Dough Beads
One of the standards for preschoolers is beading.  Therefore, I really wanted my morning class to make their own necklaces for our Christmas concert.  I looked online for toddler beads (ones with bigger holes) this fall and could not find what I wanted.  Either they weren't festive enough or they were too expensive.  But, thankfully I thought of this recipe I used with my second graders.  It was so fun to make our own beads.  We added some glitter.  I did end up baking them a bit, because it is pretty wet around here lately.

Reading Christmas Stories During Independent Reading

Reindeer Gift Bags
Amy (volunteer) came to school with us on Monday to do this project.  Thank goodness, because we needed some hand-over-hand assistence with cutting out our reindeer faces.  Gluing on the antlers, ears, eyes, and nose though was all on our own.  That is why many of the reindeer below look like Picasso did them.
These will be used to put our ornaments in for our parents.  I won't be posting our ordiments, because they have the childrens photos on them.

Angel Garland
Last week we learned about the Angel Gabriel and how he gave Mary the news she was to bear a son.  It is so cute to see the kids hold their tummies and exclaim, "Baby."

They really get things we can't understand.
Dipping the angel in the glitter was definitely the best part.  For children glitter means magical.

We strung them on our classroom wall.

Side note:  Don't look too closely our wall is filthy.  I have washed it twice, but the marks are permanent.  It is my dream that I will get someone to paint a mural of a child reading there.  The child would be looking at a book and have a thought bubbled filled with a whimsical image of his/herself within the book.

Often cleanup is more fun then creating.  We had a lot of splashing going on when we suppose to be washing our hands.

Hand and Feet Turkeys
For the American holiday of Thanksgiving, our preschool class created this cute turkey.  We used the outline of the children's hands and feet.  We are sending these crafts to our new dads and moms.
The little one who created this one is such a perfectionist.  She made it look identical to mine.  Most of them have their eyes glued to their feathers

A little one working on his turkey.  He too is being extra precise.
The gifts we were given.

This is the bubble wrap that came with the potty chairs.

When we opened the potty chairs the whole class wanted to sit on them with their clothes still on, just for fun.  But, when I showed the students how to pop bubble wrap they forgot they even received new potty chairs.  We spent a good 15 minutes popping bubble wrap.

Animal Week
My (Mateja's) mom leading the kid's to preschool on this beautiful Monday morning.

We have been learning about animals.  So, thanks to Jan's great idea we took the kids to look at the animals that live in our backyard.  This is a photo of the kids watching a mama goat with her kids.

Here some of the children are watching this black bunny play around in her hutch.

We made puppets of our "farm" dog Roxie.

They loved having them on their hands.  It was really hard for them to move the puppets mouth.

Independent Reading
We read farm books during individual reading time.  This little girls is learning to turn medium weight pages.

Even though we still get confused which way to hold our books, we are learning tons.  This is definitely an exploration learning zone.

Butterfly Craft
One of the animals we talked about was butterflies.  Here are some of our butterfly wings.

We had to get lots of paint and glitter on before we would fold them.

Some of the completed butterflies.

Model Airplanes
We made model airplanes.  It was so fun flying them around the classroom.

Here is a child unmaking it.  Most of our airplanes ended up in the trash before preschool was over.  That's okay they had too small of parts to go back to the baby house with them.

First Days
A view from the inside of the preschool classroom.

Some of the afternoon class playing with blocks.

Stringing beads (a 3 year old standard).

Gentle touches (guideline #1 in our class).
Bravo!  I was a proud teacher.  This isn't the first time.  This little girl has learned to always recruit friends to help her.  I am not stopping it, because it is so cute.

This sweetheart on her first day.  If you look closely you will notice she builds with her Lego blocks in a unique way.  She puts the peg part with the label down.

The preschool building.  It is connected to the COTP prenatal program classroom and office.

Our fabulous playground.
