Easter Concert

Tuesday afternoon we had our Easter Concert.  The entire Lion room came to the concert, but just the morning preschool class sang.  The song was "Lord I Lift Your Name On High."

They have improved greatly from their Christmas Concert.  A child who wouldn't go any where near the "stage" sat on my lap during the concert.  A child who looked around last time sang.

I am so proud of them!

The Easter Bunny Came

Our book for shared reading this last week has been Spot's First Easter, in order to prepare us for the Easter Bunny's arrival.  Finally the Easter Bunny came and we were so excited to find all the eggs he hid around our classroom.
Sara did all the prep work for these cute Easter Bunny masks I found here and Aimee helped the kids make them.  Thanks girls we loved them!

The eggs were so yummy that I had to stop each child at 2.  Look at all of our shells just from the preschoolers.
We went to visit the real bunnies that live on our back property and of course we wore our bunny masks, so we wouldn't scare them.  We even saw the cute baby bunnies.  The students did a great job and were dousma gentle.

Dying Easter Eggs

The kids dyed Easter Eggs, which was precious!

Thank goodness we had a guest Miss Aimee helping us dye our Easter Eggs, so I could enjoy the experience.  Otherwise my description of "precious" might have been more along the the lines of "overwhelming."

When I was looking over their masterpieces this afternoon I was surprised to find so many cracked eggs.  Then I recalled that every child broke at least one.

Here is an account of the morning class:
- 1 egg broke by accident when an adult passed the eggs out through reaching arms
-1 egg dropped from a little hand
-1 egg  crunched when being held too tight
-1 egg, well a student was a bit jealous that the other students had eggs with “owies,” so this egg was held above the ground and let go of.  The owner picked it up and asked, “Egg owie?”
(These are just the ones I remember.)

Supplies Needed

Back in November before we came home I posted a the blog post Supplies Needed.  It worked out great, because a ton of our friends gave us items to bring back.  We will again be going home in March/April.  If you would like to donate any of these items plan to give them to us between March 29th-April 4th.  If  you would like to mail an item, here is our address.
Here are the supplies that COTP needs:
rice cereal
Dove bar soap (We really need this one.  We love how gentle Dove is on our kids.  They get bathed four times a day and at least twice with soap.)
baby lotion
probiotics
luffas

Here are the gently used items that COTP needs:
Bumbo seats
Church clothes for our kids (size 4 and under)
sandals (size 8 and under)

Adam's Parents Came to Visit us in Haiti-Part 2

One of the things I knew I wanted to do while Adam's parents were here is take them to 18B.  In Cap-Haitian the roads are labeled by numbers and letters.  It makes finding places so easy.  Therefore, 18B is the name and location of the photographer studio.

I love this studio, because they pose the subjects and give you cool backgrounds.

Imagination the Beginning Step of Literacy

Last spring I graduated with my Masters in Reading, which translates to I love everything literacy related.

Adam and I were over at the Moxon's tonight.  They are fellow missionaries, who have been in Haiti for much longer than we have.  Bill Moxon said something that literally is keeping me up hours later then I ever stay up.  I don't want to change his words, but I have been playing around with the concept so much I can't remember the original statement.

He said something to the effect that...literacy is so much more than print.

He explained people have experiences with 3-D, because that is their lived experience.  But, some people do not have experiences with the 2-D, so much to the extent that they don't know representing.  Not only have some people not interacted with books, but they haven't been given the chance to see flat images.

I too have had a bit of experience with representing.  I have met people whom I have taken their photograph and they have not recognized themselves.

Bill went beyond people not having access to mirrors.  He stated that not only do some not recognize their own 2-D image, they do not recognize family members photos.  There hasn't been an opportunity to move beyond reality into representing objects.

This concept is the flip to what Plato explained in his Allegory of the Cave.  In Plato's Republic  the Allegory of the Cave explains the prisoners only know the 2-D.  They have only seen the shadows cast on the wall by the fire of those walking past.  In Plato's story the freed prisoners face a disconnect between the shadows and the real images.

I did not spend all this time thinking about reality, Plato, and representing.  Instead I have been thinking about our COTP children.  Some of these children haven't been given the opportunity to imagine, therefore in preschool play is a huge goal.

Just this week we have had two major break ah-ha's with using our imagination.  First, one of our fellow classmates was at an appointment and the classmates imagined him at school with us.  They would pretend to sit on him and apologize.  When playing with our baby dolls the students insisted he be given a baby doll to play with at the table.  The second celebration was today when the children had a birthday party for a nanny who wasn't even present.  They sang "Happy Birthday" in English and Kreyol, as well as prayed for her.  A cute moment was when one of the girls proclaimed, "You are 3," to the nanny the little girl was pretending to be present.

Imagination is the beginning step of literacy.  These precious children are well on their way.

St.Patrick's Day Party

In preschool, I will take any holiday to put on a fet (party).  Plus, St.Patrick's Day is a good one.  In my hometown there is a parade right down Main Street after school.

The kids and I did the best to celebrate.  I am pretty sure the nannies thought I was crazy when I explained that the children needed to wear green to school or they would get pinched by their classmates.

We enjoyed eating green Jello Jigglers.  I am not sure if the students believed me when I assured them it was food, because most of them held it in their hand till the Jello began to melt through their fingers.  We became sticky messes, but they loved squishing it.

Using their carpus (5th grade Science vocabulary) and thumb, the children made 3-leaf clovers.  This is one of the only clovers that actually looks like a 3-leaf clover.
 We also made rainbow crafts...
